Building Service-to-Career Pathways Nationwide

Service‑to‑Career Pathway is a model in which service programs intentionally connect service experiences—including AmeriCorps, community‑based service, and other forms of civic engagement—to meaningful employment and long‑term career advancement. In this model, service itself is the developmental engine, and workforce practices are integrated to strengthen—not overshadow—the service experience.

Service‑to‑Career Pathways do this by:

  • Building technical, professional, and leadership skills through high‑quality service roles that address real community needs.
  • Supporting career exploration and pathway navigation while helping members build social capital and professional networks.
  • Providing mentorship, coaching, and wraparound supports that reinforce member success during and after service.
  • Offering opportunities to earn industry‑recognized credentials, academic credit, and demonstrate validated skill attainment through service activities.
  • Creating clear, supported connections to education, training, earn‑and‑learn programs like Registered Apprenticeship, and employment as next steps after service.

Service‑to‑Career Pathways start with the strengths of service programs—their mission, community impact, member development focus, and civic engagement ethos. Workforce practices are then woven in to provide intentional, structured opportunities for members to understand the labor market, make informed decisions, and transition into quality careers aligned with their goals.

ASC leads the national Service‑to‑Career movement by:

  • Supporting commissions to design, implement, and scale pathways
  • Convening national partners, employers, and funders
  • Building shared learning infrastructure and evaluation capacity
  • Advancing policy and funding alignment across states and sector
