Subgrants

Thanks to the generous support of our foundation partners, we are able to award subgrants to service commissions and other nonprofit organizations. Our current focus areas include afterschool programming, AmeriCorps member emergency funds, and youth service.

Afterschool Programming

One of the key ways AmeriCorps programs and their members serve local communities is by providing supplemental educational opportunities, like afterschool programming. Thanks to the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, ASC has been able to facilitate two multi-year initiatives designed to support service commissions in developing and/or expanding AmeriCorps program that provide afterschool opportunities for students.

In 2022, we selected five states to receive two-year grants to support the expansion or creation of afterschool programs through national service programing. Each grant was awarded to a collaborative partnership between a statewide afterschool network and a state service commission. In 2017, we selected 11 states to receive grants in order to form partnerships with statewide afterschool networks and to develop, support, and sustain quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities for children and youth. The multi-year initiative resulted in 15 new AmeriCorps grants being awarded to afterschool programs. In addition, we published two toolkits highlighting easy-but-innovative ways AmeriCorps and national service can strengthen afterschool programs. AmeriCorps Member Emergency Funds

For many who serve their communities through AmeriCorps, the member living allowance is not sufficient to cover unanticipated financial hardships that occur during their terms of service. Thanks to the generous support of the Schultz Family Foundation, ASC has established a pool of matching funds for service commissions interested in offering emergency assistance to AmeriCorps members experiencing hardship.

Youth Service

Young people benefit from meaningful service opportunities, and having early exposure to service is critical to establishing lifelong volunteers and engaged citizens. Thanks to the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Allstate Foundation, ASC has been able to facilitate several initiatives to support service commissions in developing and expanding youth service opportunities in states across the country.

ASC received a $300,000 grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to deepen youth service and service-learning in eight states. The funding will support eight state service commissions, each receiving a grant of $30,000 for 18 months to replicate successful youth service initiatives. Read more about Deepening Youth Service.
ASC received a $500,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation to expand youth-led service initiatives. The funding will support 10 state service commissions, each receiving an 18-month subgrant to support a range of initiatives including service project mini-grants for young people ages 5-25, support to new or existing youth advisory councils, and training to nonprofits to empower youth-led service. In 2021, ASC awarded grants to 11 service commissions for a 15-month initiative to identify how the commission network can expand youth service opportunities through national service. This work resulted in a report that assessed national trends in youth service and proposed new strategies and several state-based youth service landscape assessments.
